And its a combination of lighting and your background. For metals I use a black back ground with a lamp right above it to really bring out the shine. For darker objects photograph them against white back grounds. The type of light bulb in the lamp can also make a big difference. Best advice I can give it to experiment with a few different kinds of light bulbs and try taking pics outside. Natural light verses artificial makes a pretty big difference as well.
